Maritza (Community Health Worker): I don't like to see him give up so easily. There are plenty of resources out there, though I know times are tough, but I'd like to keep on working with him and help him understand all that is available. I know it is going to take a long time and a lot of phone calls and visits, but I think it's worth it.
Mary (supervisor): Definitely, times are tough. But we can't give up on him. Clearly transportation is an issue. Maybe the hospital can provide some taxi vouchers to help. Mostly though, I think we need to meet him where he is and see what his own goals are and how he thinks he can best access resources. We need to give him some hope and then partner with him to address the challenges.
Jane (case manager/RN): Maybe we just need to step back. He has our number. He can call us if and when he is ready. I am all for empowerment, but not hand-holding. How about a computer? Does he have access? He could do Weight Watchers online. Or maybe there is a telephone-based counseling program, like the Quitline for smokers.
